Adult Education is often seeking new tutors. Sometimes we're looking for tutors to teach specific classes or skills that are in demand, and sometimes we're approached with ideas for new classes by prospective tutors. We also employ life models.
If you think you're able to offer us a class we'd be interested in, please contact your regional Adult Education office to register your interest.
If you submit a proposal to us, we'll consider the following factors in deciding whether or not to proceed with your course idea:
- Suitability
- Cost to the student
- Uniqueness
- Getting enough enrolments
- How it fits with our overall program
- Practicality (i.e., do we have the necessary facilities/resources?)
How to Apply
The first step to becoming an Adult Education tutor is to be on our Tutor Register by completing an application form. If we have a vacancy in your area we may contact you to see if you are available.
Forms should be returned to the Adult Education office in your region. If you are available in more than one region, it's advisable to send a separate copy to each region.
What are the steps to offering an Adult Education course?
- Fill in a tutor application form and/or course proposal
- Application/proposal considered by Adult Education
- If your course is accepted, there will be further discussions and an interview with an Adult Education Program Manager
- Tutors are sent a Letter of Offer
- Course advertised
- Course starts if enough enrolments are received

Employment conditions
Pay rates per hour (as of 1/01/07):
- Standard Rate: $34.10
- Enhanced Rate: $42.52
- Preparation Rate: $23.87
- Life Model $18.88
The enhanced rate is paid to tutors with specific high-level or in-demand skills. A negotiated rate may also be agreed upon in some circumstances. As an employed tutor, all tutors and their classes are covered by Adult Education's insurance.
Self employed people may choose to work with us as an independent Contractor. Unlike Tutors, Contractors are not 'employees' of the Department of Education and are required to establish a 'Contract for Services' and hold appropriate business insurances.
Pay rates include normal class preparation time. An additional payment may be negotiated for preparation above and beyond what is considered 'normal'. For example, preparation time would be paid in cases where you had to pick up and return equipment for each session, or had to prepare substantial materials for use in a class.
Tutors are not expected to bear costs associated with their course. It's helpful if you consider what costs could be involved when planning your course with Adult Education staff. These could include:
- Hire of a specialised venue
- Materials you need to use to give examples
- Demonstration aids
- Goods you intend to provide for students
- Special tools or equipment needed
- Wear and tear on your own tools/equipment
All costs associated with a course (ie. tutor salary, materials etc.) are passed directly on to students through their course fees.
All new tutors are required to attend a Tutor Induction session if it is likely their course will proceed.
